How electric perimeter security works

Electric Perimeter Security

RubberGuard Electric perimeter security is a non-lethal solution recommended by security professionals. It is one of the few perimeter protection systems that deter and detect. Electric shock creates a stronger psychological barrier than razor wire. It also acts as an alarm sensor.

Electric fencing is designed to periodically release a short, sharp, safe but effective shock that an intruder will remember and avoid.

The energizer converts power into a brief high voltage pulse that runs through a conductor.

In the case of RubberGuard this conductor can be either the RubberGuard Wire or the RubberGuard Barrier. The ‘live’ terminal of the energizer releases an electrical pulse along the conductor and the ‘earth’ terminal is connected to a ground or earth rod. Anything or anyone touching both the live conductor and the earth (or any earthed object) will complete an electrical circuit, and receive a shock.

Is it Safe to Use?

The device that powers a RubberGuard security electric fence is called an Energizer. The safety of this device is strictly regulated by international safety standards such as IEC60335.2.76. The output of these devices can reach up to 10,000 volts. However, the pulse width is very short, within the order of 100 microseconds. The peak current and pulse energy are thus kept well below dangerous levels. RubberGuard ensures that the energizers we use and recommend have been tested and comply with the IEC60335.2.76 standard. Test reports can be provided if requested.

Electric Fencing Laws

In most countries electric security fences need to be sign posted:

  • The sign should have the size of at least 100mm x 200mm.
  • It is recommended that the basic color of the sign be yellow with black inscription and should use the words:“ELECTRIC FENCE” or “HIGH VOLTAGE”.
  • The inscription shall be permanent, inscribed on both sides and have a height of at least 25mm.
  • An electric security fence when installed in such a position that members of the public might reasonably be expected to touch it, such as along a public road or area, should be identified by a number of warning signs which must be attached to the fence or wall at intervals recommended to be of approximately 10m to 50m.
